Operated by the Royal Air Force, the Gibraltar airport cannot be technically termed as a Spanish airport and is used for those tourists who visit the western areas of the Costa de La Luz or the Costa del Sol.
The Government of Spain is very keen to use the airport for its tourists and have had several talks with the UK government about it. The only issue the tourists face if they are heading to Spain, is that they have to walk to the Spanish border or either drive there and then continue towards their destination. If one is driving to the town, they have to cross the runway for which barriers and lights are stop tourists from drifting in front of an aircraft.
Walking from the airport to the Spanish border does not take much time, and is estimated to be shorter that the walk at the Malaga airport plane arrivals to the luggage hall.
The taxi ranks always have taxis that are waiting to be hired. Outside the terminal is where the taxi ranks are situated. It is advised to walk to the Spanish border and then hail a Spanish taxi to take you to your destination. One can book a taxi in advance by calling the taxi help line number. There are also taxis that can be hired from the taxi ranks at the Frontier, Piazza, Casemates Square, Trafalgar Cemetery and the Anglican Cathedral.
Although there are no train services from the airport, one can go to the Spanish border and check for further information.
Opposite the airport terminal building is where one can find the bus services. The buses go from the airport and around Gibraltar. There are also several websites that have bus guides, timetables along with the fares.
The parking at the Gibraltar airport is not the best in terms of car park space. Located opposite the airport, the parking at Gibraltar airport car park has narrow spaces and is difficult to steer. The parking closes daily at 9pm and the prices are charged per hour.
