The "Gran Canaria Airport" was initially known as Gando Airport; in Spanish it is called the Aeropuerto de Gran Canaria.
This airport is sited in the Gran Canaria Island of Spain. It had a record number of tourists in 2008 and was Spain's 5th busiest airport.
The airport has two runways and is the islands only airport to do so. These two runways can accommodate 53 landings as well as take-offs in an hour. The Bay of Gando and towards the east of Gran Canaria is where the airport is situated. The city of "Las Palmas de Gran Canaria" is only about 18 kms from the airport, popular tourist destinations are located almost 25 kms from the airport.
Once you go outside the three arrivals zones, you will find the taxi ranks from where you can hire a taxi that will take you to your destination. The taxi zone is where one can get information on the fares and distances and also some advice on where one needs to go while on a vacation or during one of the busy times.
There is no train service from the airport of Gran Canaria. If one has to travel by train they can get to the train station at the city centre via any public transport from the airport. As the island is quite small you may wish to try car rental from Gran Canaria airport.
The public transport system at the Gran Canaria airport is excellent. There are two main airport bus services from the Gran Canaria airport and you will find several websites that have details to the time, routes taken and the fares. There are also a few companies that operate private buses. Some may find this as an easier option especially if you're travelling in a huge group.
There is a lot of parking space at the parking terminal of the Gran Canaria airport. Just opposite to the terminal building of the main airport is the parking area for long and short terms. There are a total of 2140 parking spaces that can be availed off at the airport. Of these 37 are designated for people with disabilities. The costs are nominal, with the first half hour being free, and the fee is charged from the second half hour onwards.
